Majun Barfi is a traditional Indian sweet often made with dried fruits, nuts, and a mixture of various spices and herbs. Here’s a recipe to make this delicious and nutritious treat:

Ingredients

  • Dates (seedless): 250 grams
  • Almonds: 100 grams
  • Cashews: 100 grams
  • Pistachios: 100 grams
  • Walnuts: 100 grams
  • Poppy seeds (khus khus): 2 tablespoons
  • Desiccated coconut: 2 tablespoons
  • Ghee (clarified butter): 2 tablespoons
  • Honey: 2 tablespoons
  • Cardamom powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dry ginger powder (saunth): 1/2 teaspoon
  • Edible gum (gond): 2 tablespoons
  • Makhana (lotus seeds): 50 grams
  • Saffron strands: A pinch (optional)

Method

Step 1

Prepare the Ingredients: Finely chop the dates. Roughly chop the almonds, cashews, pistachios, and walnuts. Dry roast the poppy seeds, desiccated coconut, and makhana separately until they turn golden brown. Set them aside to cool. Once cool, grind the roasted makhana into a coarse powder.

Step 2

Fry the Edible Gum: Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan and fry the edible gum (gond) until it puffs up and turns light golden. Set aside to cool. Once cooled, grind the fried edible gum into a coarse powder.

Step 3

Cook the Mixture: In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee. Add the chopped dates and cook on low heat until they soften and form a paste-like consistency. Add the chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts) and cook for 2-3 minutes. Mix in the roasted poppy seeds, desiccated coconut, and makhana powder. Stir well. Add the ground edible gum, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, dry ginger powder, and saffron strands (if using). Cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes, ensuring all ingredients are well combined.

Step 4

Sweeten the Mixture: Add honey to the mixture and stir well until everything is uniformly mixed. Cook for an additional minute, then turn off the heat.

Step 5

Set the Barfi: Grease a tray or plate with a little ghee. Transfer the hot mixture onto the tray and spread it evenly, pressing it down to form a smooth layer. Allow it to cool and set completely.

Step 6

Cut and Serve: Once the mixture has set, cut it into squares or diamond shapes. Store the Majun Barfi in an airtight container. Enjoy this rich and healthy sweet, packed with the goodness of nuts and spices!
